Environmental Sustainability Plan

On September 27, 2023, the Sisters City Council adopted the City’s first Environmental Sustainability Plan, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for the community. This visionary Plan underscores the City's commitment to safeguarding the natural environment and ensuring a high quality of life for current and future generations.

The 2023 Environmental Sustainability Plan serves as a foundational framework to adapt to the ever-changing environment and lay the groundwork for a more sustainable future. The Plan identifies and integrates key goals and policies from various existing city plans, such as the Wastewater Capital Facilities Plan, Water Capital Facilities Plan, Urban Forest Management Plan, Transportation System Plan, Wildfire Risk Assessment and Mitigation Plan, Parks Master Plan, and Comprehensive Plan. By aligning these efforts, the City will work towards addressing environmental sustainability, climate change, and conservation in a holistic manner.

Sisters and the broader Central Oregon region are already experiencing the impacts of climate change, which are expected to intensify in the coming years. The community has witnessed increased wildfire activity and severity, reduced snowpack in the Cascade Range, and fluctuations in water levels in regional waterways and aquifers. The Sisters City Council recognizes the importance of protecting the natural beauty and resources that define the community's identity and support its economy. With a deep-rooted connection to the surrounding environment, the City is taking proactive steps to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and enhance its citizens' overall quality of life.

Adopting the 2023 Environmental Sustainability Plan reaffirms Sisters' dedication to responsible environmental stewardship. By taking action today, the City will work towards securing a sustainable and vibrant future for all its residents and visitors.
